Track star, one Track Mind: Ryuji is prone to tunnel vision. During his time as a Phantom Thief, this ended up being an exceptional talent. They were on a mission and knew what needed to be done and how to do it. This was also and essential while he part of the track team. Outside of this is where Ryuji's linear way of thinking falls short. He's unable to think far ahead into the future, often leaving things like studying for exams for later. That is a problem for Future Ryuji, and oh, a problem it is. He starts to feel the strain around exam time, he often has to rely on the help of his friends to get stuff done, just not a lot absorbed. He appreciates their effort. He also often has to have concepts and plans explained to him several times, and doesn't always think his actions through before doing them.
Of course his mind is also on another thing: picking up chicks. Being a Phantom Thief helped him regain his lost confidence, and Ryuji now has the full vigor and mind of a healthy seventeen year-old boy: meaning, he's always thinking about girls. Seeing as the Phantom Thieves are basically heroes, that would mean easy access to girls. At least, in theory. On more than one occasion he tried to talk to girls using the Phantom Thieves as a hook, though his efforts proved fruitless. That still never deterred him, and he is always on the lookout for potential dates and hook-ups.
"Let's tear 'em apart!"
Explosive Anger: Ryuji's biggest setback is his impossibly destructive anger. His temper has landed him in trouble numerous times in the past, and continues to do so. He knows full well what his anger can do and how it can harm others, but he can't seem to help his short temper. Kamoshida knew this and manipulated Ryuji by insulting his mother, provoking him to violence and t lash out with all his might. He attempted to punch the volleyball coach, but was overpowered. He broke Ryuji's leg, claiming "self-defense." The school disbanded the track team as a result, and Ryuji was labelled school delinquent. His anger destroyed not only his life, but the lives of his fellow athletes. They blamed him, and he blamed himself, as well. In all this bitterness, Ryuji simply started doing what everyone expected of him: he dyed his hair, began to skip school.
After becoming a Phantom Thief, Ryuji learned he could channel his anger for good. Although he still isn't the best at controlling his anger and still occasionally lets it get the better of them, even if he knows when to apologize.
"But I've realized now... as long as I'm bein' myself, I'll always have somewhere I can fit in."
Definition of Excitement: For better or for worse, Ryuji has always been the first one at any sort of scene. His pure curiosity and energetic nature often get the better of him. Whether that excitement stems from a simple hang out with his friends or from an action-packed Phantom Thieves meeting, Ryuji he always puts his all into everything. Before his fateful encounter Kamoshida, his school's volleyball coach, Ryuji was a star runner on the track team. Being part of the track team was his pride and joy. Those dreams would soon be dashed.
After the track team disbanded, Ryuji lost his team and his friends and was no longer praised by his peers or teachers. Instead, he simply endured their scornful looks and whispers of his delinquency. As a result, Ryuji became reclusive and reserved, as he became the "punk" they all claimed him to be.
After meeting the leader of the Phantom Thieves, things started to change for the better. As he grew more comfortable with him, his energy and aspirations for the future returned. He made sure that Ryuji could be himself again: loud and youthful, and always with something to say.
"They suffered with me, gritted their teeth with me... ...Honestly, I think it was only 'cause of them I was able to run at all."
Delinquent with a Heart of Gold: Even though he can be a childish troublemaker, Ryuji has always been someone that cares for others. He deeply and truly wants the best for his friends, even if he has strange ways of showing it. He likes to laugh and tease people, and wants to be liked. He has a desire to help those that need it most and doesn't turn his back on people, like when he tried to get the track team reinstated.
He tries to put others before himself, even if it's not immediately obvious. His way of living boils down to wanting to be free and living for himself, but not at the expense of others like many of the Phantom Thieves' targets. There have been times where he went above and beyond for his friends, including seemingly sacrificing his life to help his friends escape Shido's palace.
"That's total bullshit!"
Vulgar Boy: Ryuji has a dirty mouth, and is even labelled "vulgar boy" at the beginning of the game. He can barely say a sentence without uttering some sort of cuss word or slang. This didn't help his reputation at school, and combined with his new look and his slipping grades, he became very unapproachable. Like any teenager, he just wants to do what's most fun, and most of all, he wants to feel free.
