I can't be like this, always crying like that. I've got to become even stronger and more resilient. I've still a long way to go before I attain a weed's spirit. I'll definitely catch up, so just wait for me.

Thanks to constant sickness and her own crippling shyness, Shiemi Moriyama has lived the majority of her life in a very sheltered manner. Usually too prone to falling ill, rather than going out and playing with friends or attending school to make them, Shiemi spent the majority of her childhood at home, helping her grandmother tend to her garden, which supplied a shop for exorcists run by her mother. Because of this she never exactly learned how to be social, and has ended up almost timid in her dealings with other people. Her inability to go out in public fostered that nature, to the point where her mother described her as a "house spirit," always shying away from customers even when called to introduce herself. For most of her life, her only friends were her grandmother and the flowers and plants in the garden.

The years that she spent in the garden with her grandmother weren't exactly years wasted— during that time, she learned a lot about how to keep a garden, what kinds of plants are good for what kinds of remedies, and how to grow them. Shiemi loves plants and flowers, just as she loved her grandmother, who was more like a mother to her than her own, who was always too busy to pay attention to her. The garden had become a special place for the both of them, and it was where Shiemi was told the story of the Garden of Amahara, a place where God had gathered all of the world's plants together. Inspired and encourage, she decided that, one day, she wanted to visit the garden. While her grandmother claimed she would be unable to go with her, Shiemi agrees to go looking for it on her own, when she gets a little older. This becomes Shiemi's aspiration.

While throughout most of her life she had been shy and unable to branch out and make friends with other people, her first real "friend" (more like an aquaintance than anything) was Yukio Okumura, a young exorcist her age who visited their shop with his adoptive father and then-Paladin, Father Fujimoto. While Shiemi is still as shy as usual, she eventually overcomes it enough to present him with a clover as a charm for good luck and safety at his job, and nicknames him "Yuki-chan" when told that calling him by "Sensei" is a little awkward and over-formal. This is a huge step for her, and ends up being a rather large boost in confidence.

Two years later, brimming with determination, one day Shiemi boldly states one day that she's saved up enough money to travel the world, and that she is going to go out and look for the Garden of Amahara. Unfortunately, the amount of money she has isn't quite enough, so her grandmother suggests that she go out and look around town for the day. Shiemi promises to be back before sundown and to help with the garden's chores then, and strikes out. When she returns, she hurriedly and excitedly goes to share her adventure with her grandmother, only to find her dead in the garden— crushed under the vine trellis she'd been meant to help her set up. Shiemi feels an extreme amount of guilt over this, and blames herself for not being there to help her— if she hadn't gone out that day or if she had helped her with covering the grapes before she'd gone out, that none of this would have happened. With the guilt over her actions and mourning the loss of her grandmother, she ends up backsliding and coops herself up in the garden, sworn to protect what she had loved and worked so hard for.

With her grandmother gone, the garden fell into Shiemi's care, and while she'd learned much from her grandmother about how to care for it, however, despite her best efforts, she is unable to keep it as it was. Desperate to keep it from dying it no matter what the cost, Shiemi ends up being tricked by a demon that promises it will help her and keep the garden safe. Naively, Shiemi agrees, and the demon begins slowly sapping out her life force through her legs. Eventually, it leaves Shiemi unable to walk, though she still strives daily to work in the garden and keep it healthy. Though she seems aware of the demon's affect on her, she made her promise and tends to keep it. This sort of naivete is not uncommon with Shiemi, though in this case it was certainly a clouded judgment, the weight of feeling responsible for her grandmother's death weighing her down. Shiemi's once-again failing health and dedication to the garden cause a rift between herself and her mother, who, while worried for Shiemi's health, also doesn't seem to realize just how important the garden is to Shiemi, nor that she blames herself for the loss of her grandmother.

The following spring was when she met the series protagonist, Rin Okumura. Despite a rocky start with Rin breaking a demon-warding gate (thanks to his newly unlocked demonic heritage), the two make up quickly once Shiemi realizes he's actually a nice guy, and Shiemi immediately puts him to work helping in the garden. Despite her shyness, she had a tendency to be overly friendly, and even Rin is a bit taken aback by how quickly she asks if the two of them could be friends. Elated by his answer, she tells him about the Garden of Amahara and her dream to find it one day— a dream that she unfortunately may not be able to fulfill, with the state of her legs. It turns out that her mother had summoned Yukio (and Rin by proxy) to the house to check on Shiemi and make sure her illness wasn't of a demonic nature, since all of the doctors she had taken her to were unable to figure out the problem. Shiemi lashes out at her mother angrily, however agrees to let Yukio check on her. When he states that the source of her ailment is likely a demon, Shiemi denies that she had ever been in contact with one. When later confronted by Rin, it is revealed that she had indeed spoken with a demon and allowed it to take hold in her. She feels foolish when confronted with the notion that what she really wanted was to find the Garden of Amahara, knowing now that her pact with the demon had made it so that she could no longer go anywhere. However, with Rin and Yukio's help, the demon is defeated, and Shiemi realizes that her grandmother wouldn't want her to just stay in the garden and protect it, regardless of how important she felt it was, but that she'd want her to follow her dreams.

In order to do so, she enrolls in True Cross Academy, admitting she's weak and intending to become stronger, and intending to learn how to handle herself better in the real world and learn as much about it as possible (and because she'd always wanted to see Yukio teach). It's there that Shiemi really begins to blossom as a person, revealing an overly cheerful and optimistic attitude. She's extremely kind, often going out of her way to help people and be nice to everyone she meets. Though she has moments where she doubts herself, Shiemi pushes herself onward, deciding, eventually, that she can't keep relying on Rin and Yukio— she needs to make a way for herself, particularly after Rin makes a total ass of himself by flusteredly exclaiming that he and Shiemi are not friends. This leads her to befriending (or trying to befriend) one of the other female pages in the class, Izumo Kamiki.

Unfortunately, because of Shiemi's sheltered nature and lack of understanding social cues, she doesn't seem to fully understand (or care) that Izumo is mistreating her, using her more like a slave than as a friend. She seems devastated when she realizes that her attempts to make friends with her aren't working as planned, growing angry with Rin not understanding that she needs to make friends on her own, telling him that he has friends, so he wouldn't understand. Later that same day, when Izumo and her best friend Paku find themselves in trouble on the receiving end of a demon attack, Rin asks Shiemi to run and find help. Instead, she follows him, and ends up saving Paku's life. It's them that Shiemi truly resolves to find a way to be as big of help to everyone she possibly can, even if it's only little things like taking care of chores rather than fighting. Her overeagerness to earn friends fades a bit as she starts to find her place within the ranks of the class, though she seems to ignore the fact that Izumo brazenly informs her that she hates her, still going out of her way to be her friend, worrying about her even when she herself is in dire straits or asking her for help when she needs to figure out how to wear a school uniform.

It was during that time that Shiemi learns that she has special abilities available to her as an exorcist, having the ability to summon a baby greenman spirit. Because of this ability, shared by only one other classmate, Shiemi has the potential to acquire a meister in the class of tamer. Shiemi herself was shocked she could do something that amazing, but she and her summoned spirit, Nee, bonded quickly, including him learning all of her special names for different plants, being able to grow them out of his body at a moment's notice, something that ends up buying the group a good deal of time during their Exwire certification exam. Though she has this ability, she still wavers a bit on whether or not she actually wants to be an exorcist, knowing that it will put her life in jeopardy. It takes Rin getting hurt for her to make up her mind that she wants to help people (Rin and Yukio especially), and her resolve to better herself grows even more, and continues to do so on each and every mission they go on.

When the true nature of Rin's heritage is revealed, Shiemi is at a loss; she feels shocked and hurt, realizing that she truly knows very little about either of them, and that they didn't trust her with the truth. When faced with Rin, she doesn't know what to do or how to behave around him, and instead turns from him and gives him the cold shoulder. Though she isn't afraid of him, she doesn't know what to say, though it all comes off as her hating him for what he is. Though she and their fellow classmates are called out for being cowards for not being able to confront their feelings regarding Rin up front, Shiemi continues to waffle about how to handle the situation.

In her continuing effort to be of use to everyone, upon reaching Kyoto Shiemi vows to no longer get in anyone's way or cause trouble for them... And then proceeds to do exactly that. Her confidence waning, sided with an inability to call Nee, Shiemi ends up breaking down when confronted about her screw-ups by Izumo, explaining to her how frustrated she feels for being useless and not strong, not being able to help anyone, especially the twins. Izumo responds by telling Shiemi that she's shameless, like a weed, for being able to admit something like that so openly, without any embarrassment. Shiemi takes this as a compliment and decides that, in order to better herself, she will attain the spirit of a weed, to be strong and resilient.

Though she's clumsy, extremely naive, almost to the point of seeming downright dumb and clueless at times, Shiemi is a girl who is extremely loyal and protective of her friends, and someone who is constantly learning, adapting and becoming stronger. Though she sometimes needs a little push in order to overcome her own complexes, she is outgoing, hardworking, kind and optimistic.

[ The network has a lot of people on it, almost too many— and despite having coaxed herself out of her shell slightly, Shiemi couldn't help being intimidated by talking to that many people at once! It's taken her a few minutes to get up the nerve to actually try posting, but once she does, all of that determination she's built up sort of ends up...

Well, exploding, nearly yelling at the feed. ]
H-Hello, everyone!!

[ Though her face is as red as a tomato, she manages to breathe and smile abnormally widely before continuing, seeming to gain confidence with every passing moment. ] My name is Shiemi Moriyama! I've only been here for a few days, but it's nice to meet all of you! I-I've never used anything like this before, but I wanted to give it a try! I hope I'm doing it right...

[ She doesn't look so sure of this, but it doesn't seem to deter her, either. ]
I was told it was a good way to get in contact with people, and that seemed like a good idea, I thought. I'm looking for some friends of mine. If anyone from True Cross Academy is here, I think... [ It feels a little strange, being the one to suggest a plan of action, considering that's usually other Exwire's area of expertise, or even the teachers!

But she really thinks... ]
I think we should regroup! [ That's the word she's looking for, isn't it? Regroup? ]

So please call me back if you see this! And to everyone else, I hope we can be friends!
